Federal judge halts government immigration plan
Brownfield Network: "A federal judge in San Francisco has put a temporary hold on the Department of Homeland Security’s latest effort to clamp down on undocumented immigrant workers. Judge Maxine Chesney ruled the Social Security Administration cannot send out letters to employers who have employees with Social Security numbers that do not match the Department of Homeland Security database.
Homeland Security had threatened to fine companies which employed these people. The AFL-CIO and American Civil Liberties Union argued that some of those whose numbers do not match are actually legal citizens so the letters could easily lead to harassment. According to the Washington Post, there are errors in the Social Security records of some 12.7 million native-born U.S. citizens, 250,000 foreign-born citizens and 4.8 million legal immigrants. The judge ordered the government to hold-off while she considers the AFL-CIO case. A hearing is scheduled October 1." continued
