16 Years Ago Today...

I just spent a wonderful night at the old outdoor Alpine Valley Music Theatre in Troy Wisconsin witnessing an awesome concert featuring 2 of the top living blues guitarists on the planet in most people's books, they being Eric Clapton and Stevie Ray Vaughn along with another great Robert Cray. This was a real pretty crappy weather night but a wonderful musical experience as you would expect with those three on the bill.

The somewhat long drive home was a little rough at first for me and my companion due to some heavy fog and a little bit of rain along with growing weariness from the party scene at the show and work looming about 5 hours away. We got home at 2 am and crashed for a few hours before work.

As I was waking up that Monday I heard then and now back WLUP DJ Jonathan Brandmeier on my clock radio at 5 am saying that there was a helicopter crash into the mountain the night before following the show in which Alpine Valley Theater resides with a ski resort resulting in fatalities of persons unknown at that time.

I was a little shaken knowing the tragic possibilities here; was it all three artists killed or just one or two of them, or none of them, and anxiously awaited further word while getting ready for work. That is until the confirmation came at 6 am Chicago time that indeed Blues Guitarist extraordinaire Stevie Ray Vaughn was among the 5 people killed in the crash and realized that I had just been witness to his very last performance on earth 5 hours before.

A sad day for music and his then largely growing legion of fans for sure and myself, very surreal to say the least.

May he rest in peace as he is still remembered by many fondly and here is some of that musical magic to remember him by today:

In Memory of Stevie Ray Vaughn
Born 1954 - Perished August 27th 1990

Stevie with his brother Jimmy playing a double neck
Fender Stratocaster simultaneously

Stevie being interviewed near his death, some very cool impromptu jamming and he talks about becoming sober which he did very publicly prior to his untimely death

Here are some more SRV links if your a fan like I that are worth checking out in his memory.
