This was for caving in to the threats from Al Sharpton/Jesse Jackson and their racism goon squads by actually firing Don Imus before allowing his already announced suspension to expire.
Now, I'm not a huge fan of the mostly liberal Imus, although I watched his show nearly every day alternating between Fox & Friends and him in order to see what the left was crying about that individual day.
But his firing bothers me so much as it was done after announcing they would suspend him for two weeks, after which Imus went on the obligatory "I'm sorry for offending all the black folks out there" tour that the president referred to as this:
One could bet that had the firing occurred immediately Imus wouldn't have gotten down on his knees to grovel to that racist slob at all, as the only people that truly deserve an apology in the first place haven't even been met with by Imus to receive theirs yet and thats the Rutgers Basketball Team. This has not taken place yet in that the parties involved all agreed to meet privately and outside of the media glare, which obviously meant nothing to the President of NBC news.
The next pressure cooker is heating up over at CBS and you can bet the Sharptoon & Jackson extortion squad is headed over there with this feather in their cap to make sure Imus isn't left breathing as he swings from the thoroughly enjoyed by the black community lynching already administered.

Imus Firing: Lauer Suggests NBC Caved to Pressure; Vieira Holds Sharpton's Feet to Fire
NewsBusters.org: "Give Matt Lauer and Meredith Vieira credit. On this morning's 'Today,' Lauer suggested to his boss's face that in firing Don Imus he had caved to pressure from advertisers and people like Al Sharpton. And Vieira held Al Sharpton's feet to the fire, now that he had Imus' scalp, about going after rappers and others who use similar language every day.
Here's part of the exchange, which came at 7:05 AM EDT, between Lauer and NBC News President Steve Capus:
