No hate-crime charge in sucker-punch "Blacks on Chinese" Fran Freako attack now a slaying

No hate-crime charge in sucker-punch slaying: "OAKLAND -- Two 18-year-old Oakland men were charged with murder but not hate crimes today in the fatal beating of a San Francisco man, which happened after the suspects shared a bottle of rum and groused about their lives, a prosecutor said.

Lavonte Drummer and Dominic Davis will appear in Alameda County Superior Court in Oakland this afternoon on charges that they murdered Tian Sheng Yu, 59. Yu was shopping with his son in downtown Oakland on Friday when they were accosted by the men, authorities said.

There has been widespread speculation that the attack was motivated in part by race, as the two defendants are African American and Yu was a Chinese immigrant.
