He was 97 years old,, and frankly many will probably be shocked to hear that he was still around, as I personally haven't heard nor seen him in ages on television or anywhere for that matter, as he obviously chose to avoid the public spotlight as he grew older in peace and quiet.
He starred in many movies as a member of the original Hollywood group of real heavyweights, those true "Movie Stars" that made the town the worldwide movie capital it was that fewer and fewer of this country are old enough to actually remember.
Long before the haters turned it into Freak Central as they began to churn and burn nothing but garbage TV and Movies, a phenomenon that occurred mostly since the advent of cheaper video in the late 70's.
A technological advance which brought the end of the monster film era as from then on just about any third rate Joe Schmoe could buy a couple video cameras and slap together junky projects which most then began to do thus cheapening the whole industry.
Malden also co starred with Marlon Brando in the hit movie "On the Waterfront," James Dean in "A Streetcar Named Desire", and was a longtime spokesperson for American Express during their real tv commercial heydays, coining the legendary phrase "Don't leave home without it".
A sentence that became part of the American pop culture lexicon for decades, mostly during the 70's and through the early 80's, even being used a couple times in the Major League film series starring Charlie Sheen and others right through today in some ads and tv shows from time to time.

I always remembered Malden from a cartoon spoof of him in Mad Magazine's early days, when they were mocking the "Streets" program regularly as well as the Jack Nicholson movie of the same era called "Chinatown" which gave birth to the Malden Douglas series and was set in the city of San Francisco during the era of "Rice A Roni, the San Francisco Treat".
Remember that old time jingle?
If you do, then you're around my age, and you also probably scratch your head from time to time wondering what the hell happened to that town. A beutiful city which was once one of America's crown jewels, going back to the Gold Rush of the mid 1800's and the old time Forty Niners, not the football team but the old time Gold Miners.
Of coarse we all know what a hellhole it's become toda, just like most of America's largest cities and urban areas, being run into the ground by mostly liberal politicians and their "hand out's for all" philosophy that's pretty much bankrupted them all both fiscally and morally.
So now for the fifth time in 2 weeks, we say goodbye to yet another Hollywood giant, and at the rate we're now going, pretty soon Eminem and Sean Penn will be the elder statesmen of the run down town of America haters, one of the nation's most beloved cities formerly known as Tinseltown which from now forward should now be referred to as nothing more than Shitzeltown.
May you rest in peace Mr Malden, and our prayers go out to he and his loved ones wherever they may find themselves and thanks a million for all the memories as your generation slowly leaves us and the country worse off with each passing death from America's greatest generation ever.
Malden's survivors include his wife, Nona, and daughters Mila and Cara.
