In an attempt to buy votes, politicians in Nigeria handed out motorbikes to jobless young men__promising the poor uneducated lads that they can make some money operating motorcycle taxis. But the explosion of untrained drivers on low quality cycles led to more than 4000 deaths and 20,000 injuries annually on Nigeria's roads.
What to do?
In January the politicians enacted a helmet law. "The Citizenry Erupted" reported the BBC. Angry taxi motorbike drivers complained that the helmets are pricey, and besides, their passengers steal them once they arrive at their destination. So instead, drivers have taken to wearing hollowed out pumpkins or calabashes, as makeshift helmets. Now road safety officials are prosecuting the pumpkin wearers.
Federal Road Safety Commission commander Yusuf Garba says "we are impounding their bikes and want to take them to court so they can explain why they think that wearing a calabash is good enough for their safety.
Thus, closing the universal loop;
handouts from government leads to suffering, leads to regulation, leads to enforcement, leads to suffering, leads to regulation, leads to enforcement, leads to avoidance, leads to confiscation and to punishment.
Moral of the story? Beware of politicians bearing "Gifts".
