One of which resulted in the deaths of an entire family that was the core of his downfall, the 6 Willis children , all thanks to a Mexican illegal who didn't speak English and while driving a broken down commercial 18 wheel rig of which a large piece of steel dislodged from the vehicle while driving 50 miles an hour down an expressway, eventually landing under the Willis minivan thus causing a deadly inferno, burning to death the children in the ensuing wreck .
The driver was being warned of this pending danger for multiple miles but due to the language barrier and deficiency ignored the pleas of motorists to pull over and inspect his truck.
Back to George Ryan, while he was still governor and free -falling under the cloud of that growing scandal, he then decided to put a unprecedented moratorium on all Illinois death penalty cases in order to draw as much attention as possible away from his troubles most would agree, and also in response to 13 instances of supposedly wrongly convicted individuals on death row after tainted prosecutions enabled their sentences to be overturned in Illinois courts on appeals.
Now that the state is saddled with this problem, one that is practically irreversible now with a liberal democrat like Rod Blagojevich in office and republicans banished from the governorship for the foreseeable future, death row will now fill up with incorrigible criminals serving life sentences on the taxpayers dollars and will now be given chance after chance to turn over their convictions.
"Thanks George for the memories and good riddance" I'm afraid will be the prevailing mood on his pending and well deserved incarceration.
Ryan could be on way to prison after appeals court denies hearing
WLS, 890 AM - Chicago's Talk Station: "However, George Ryan is not giving up. His attorney, former Governor Jim Thompson says he'll ask the appellate court to let Ryan remain free on bail while he appeals the case up to the Supreme Court. 'Just because people think the evidence of guilty is strong doesn't mean you can do away with a fair trial.
Otherwise, why would we have laws, why would we have trials? Ya just take 'em out and shoot 'em,' said Thompson. But if Ryan has to surrender pending appeal, November 7th he'll probably go to the Federal prison at Duluth, Minnesota - where former Governor Dan Walker did time. Walker talked about it to ABC7."
