Last week a jury handed down a conviction of a cold blooded killer in the infamous Brown's Chicken Murders 14 years ago we wrote about here. During those proceedings one lone juror it was revealed today nearly caused a stalemate by objecting to a guilty verdict but later complied apparently as he was convicted.
Well yesterday this same lone juror was the one and only vote keeping this scum from going to death row, just one of twelve is all it takes to stop a death sentence from being imposed. Talk about absurdity at it's best. The juror was a young woman and she should be investigated thoroughly and haunted 'til the day she dies for such a stupid left wing bleeding heart decision sparing the life of this uncivilized worthless man.
Secondly this law should be changed to prevent this from happening again. One person's views and vote should never be worth more weight than the majority never, especially in a situation like this. How is one individual granted that power over the entire jury? How do we know that one single person wasn't bought off to vote this way? I say investigate immediately as this guy was guilty as hell and obviously deserves the death penalty.
1 Vote Saves Luna's life
Chicago Tribune: "Eleven of the jurors who convicted Juan Luna of the 1993 Brown's Chicken massacre voted to sentence him to death Thursday, but his life was spared because of a lone holdout.
The 12-member jury spent just two hours deliberating, then voted overwhelmingly for the death penalty, according to Cook County prosecutors, defense attorneys and jurors who spoke to reporters after the sentencing." Jurors said the holdout was the same woman who initially balked before the panel voted unanimously last week to convict Luna of murdering seven workers at the Palatine fast-food restaurant during a robbery. They declined to identify her.
Unlike last week, the majority made no attempt to change her mind on sentencing.
"We didn't gang up on her because that's not right," said juror Tim Beltran, 22, of Westchester. "You don't want to force her into anything."
Under Illinois law, a death sentence can be imposed only by a unanimous jury vote. The split vote left the jury to recommend a life sentence for Luna, 33.
Juror Sherwood Brown said he struggled with whether to impose the death penalty, recalling how one of Luna's lawyers spoke of mercy during closing arguments. But Brown said he concluded that Luna hadn't shown his victims any mercy. "They begged" to live, he said. more
