If you like me have that box checked on your drivers license you may want to give this idea second thoughts after reading the following, particularly with this "culture of death" pervading hospitals and society in general today.
We're worth more dead than alive in many ways nowadays, especially if you show up in a trauma center badly injured and near death and even worse, with no health insurance. Your a candidate for this treatment:
Potential organ donor was wrongly declared brain-dead
Los Angeles Times: "A man whose family agreed to donate his organs for transplant upon his death was wrongly declared brain-dead by two doctors at a Fresno hospital, records and interviews show.
Only after the man's 26-year-old daughter and a nurse became suspicious was a third doctor, a neurosurgeon, brought in. He determined that John Foster, 47, was not brain-dead, a condition that would have cleared the way for his organs to be removed, records of the Feb. 21 incident show." read more
However to be scared away from such a well intentioned and easy cause by a couple of rogue doctors is kinda stupid as well. Here's a link to the Illinois organ donor program through the Secretary of State's office debunking some common myths related to organ donation.
