Plane part falls through roof of SW Side homeGee, I guess an aircraft part would be a good guess since it came through her roof, give that Dept. spokeswoman a raise or two!
January 12, 2007 BY SHAMUS TOOMEY and RUMMANA HUSSAIN STAFF REPORTERS Chicago Sun Times: A small, round piece of metal believed to have fallen from an airplane crashed through the roof of a Southwest Side home near Midway Airport early Friday, landing just a few feet away from a sleeping woman.
Dorothy Gohn, in her 70s, awoke to a loud thud at about 1:15 a.m. She spotted a black piece of metal on the floor of her first-floor bedroom, and saw a hole in the ceiling next to a hanging fan.
"I went to pick it up, but it was so hot that I burned my finger a little bit,” said Gohn. “Actually it was so hot, that it burned through my carpeting."
The metal was round, about six inches in diameter and two or three inches thick, she said. It had teeth around it, so Gohn figures it was some kind of gear. City aviation officials said the piece was 16 inches in diameter.
“It appears to be part of an aircraft,” said city Aviation Department spokeswoman Wendy Abrams. read more
