Santa Ana College will dedicate a scholarship for illegal immigrant students in memory of 27-year-old immigration activist Tam Ngoc Tran of Garden Grove, who was killed in a crash involving a suspected drunken driver in Maineon May 15.
The dedication will take place during a ceremony at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday
Tran, who was pursuing a doctorate in Brown Universityin Rhode Island , was herself an illegal immigrant in pursuit of U.S. citizenship. She was a student at Santa Ana College before transferring to UCLA.
The scholarship would lack meaning if the student selected for the award were not taking the same path to citizenship as Tran, said Sara Lundquist, vice president of Student Affairs at Santa Ana. So, for example, an international student with a student visa will not qualify for this scholarship, she said.
"Tam dedicated her time and energy advocating for children of undocumented immigrants who were brought into this country and grew up as Americans, but are not even permanent residents," Lundquist said.
The college is creating a $2,500 matching scholarship in Tran's name and is hoping that more people come forward with donations to add to it.. source

BOSTON (FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) - A serious car crash involving a local lawmaker and a suspected illegal immigrant is threatening to reignite already heated debates about immigration on Beacon Hill, according to police reports obtained by FOX25.
State Rep. Mike Moran of Brighton was rear-ended by a suspected illegal immigrant this week. The suspect was wearing a Mexican costume at the time of the crash where he slammed into Moran at 60 mph.
The suspect, 27-year-old Isaias Naranjo, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, leaving the scene of an accident and driving without a valid license. According to the report, when told of the serious charges he would be facing, he just laughed.
But because of action taken by Gov. Deval Patrick, state police were unable to notify immigration authorities that Naranjo might be illegal.
Three years ago, Patrick revoked an order by former governor Mitt Romney which gave state police power to investigate immigration violations.
The governor's aides are defending the measure, saying the department of correction can still pursue the violation.
The accident is bound to reverberate at the Statehouse where lawmakers just narrowly rejected a bill to crackdown on illegal immigrants.
This could also become an issue in the governor's race because of what Patrick did three years ago.
The suspect, whose blood alcohol content was .25 at the time of the accident according to the police report, is being held on $50,000 cash bail.
The raft of boycotts being imposed on Arizona over its immigration law could up end hitting Hispanic workers as hard as anyone.

PHOENIX -- As Mexican President Felipe Calderon went before Congress Thursday to urge comprehensive immigration reform, the founder of the Minuteman Project suggested Calderon stay out of the U.S. immigration debate and continue concentrating on drug cartel violence in his own country.
Jim Gilchrist was critical of both Calderon's and President Barack Obama's comments about Arizona's new immigration law at a White House meeting Wednesday.
"What President Obama and the president of Mexico, Felipe Calderon, are doing is wrong," Gilchrist said. "It's going to create more acrimony rather than a solution to the illegal immigration problem."
Gilchrist said Obama, in describing the Arizona law as "misguided," is pandering to millions of illegal immigrants who could become voters if comprehensive immigration reform is passed. "Really, amnesty for those who have come into the United States illegally is a compromise of our rule of law and it should not stand," Gilchrist said.
"I think the president is very wrong on this."
