Hopefully this doesn't get any worse as the Italians sift through the rubble of a decent sized earthquake which I couldn't recall ever hearing taking place on the Island of Italy in my lifetime as an Italian descendant and after some research I discovered they've had a rather large one in 2002 then four decent sized quakes since 1915, when a super quake killed 2600 people which back in that day and even today is an awful lot of people then the largest occurred in 1908 in the Straits of Messina, the body of water between the island of Sicily and the Italian mainland.
The earthquake and the tsunami it caused ultimately led to the deaths of more than 100,000 people.
In comparison of coarse we lost 3000 countrymen on 911 including 4693 total military men and women lost in the ensuing retribution and battles with 18406 WIA RTD (Wounded in action returned to duty) in both wars and 15501WIA not RTD. (stats)
But those numbers actually pale although still very significant to these recent natural disasters as over 230000 people were killed when the Indonesian tsunami struck Dec 26th, 2004, and then the famous earthquake in Bam Iran leveling the city which essentially killed more than 40,000 people and injured at least 30,000 more.
Hopefully the Italians have seen the worst of this episode and can being to clean up the mess and death left behind to try and return to normalcy as soon as possible

At least 20 dead in Italian quake
- CNN.com: "ROME, Italy (CNN) -- A 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck central Italy early Monday, killing more than 20 people, including four children, Italian media reported.
Rescue workers search for survivors in the ruins of a collapsed house in L'Aquila, Italy, early Monday.
Italian media attributed the death toll to local and regional officials. Italian civil protection agency officials would not confirm fatality figures.
The quake destroyed many buildings, including older structures. Rescue operations were under way, with an unknown number of people trapped in rubble.
The U.S. Geological Survey measured the quake at magnitude 6.3, conflicting with Italy's national institute for geophysics, which put the quake at magnitude 5.8.
The earthquake struck at 3:32 a.m. (9:32 p.m. ET Sunday) about 95 km (60 miles) northeast of Rome. Damage was concentrated about 120 miles from the city of L'Aquila. Frightened residents awakened from sleep and rushed into streets."continued
