Why American businesses are going under left and right? Because even our own government sends billion dollar contracts overseas to non American companies, in this case a company with American ownership involved coupled with Boeing archenemy EADS/Airbus which is French.
A company that has yet to even manufacture a single in air refueling tanker aircraft, as opposed to a proven US Chicago based company that has produced the planes before with absolute success for over 50 years and who's bid was 35 million cheaper per plane!!. Thats 35 MILLion per plane X 170 for those math challenged readers out there.
Strange choice many contend as I have friends here in Chicago who feel the same who are employed by Boeing and are quite disappointed today as this is a significant blow to the company now and well into the future.

Northrop, Airbus win $35B Air Force deal - Aviation-
msnbc.com: "WASHINGTON - The Air Force on Friday awarded Northrop Grumman Corp. and a European partner a $35 billion contract to build airborne refueling planes, delivering a major blow to Boeing Co.
The selection of Los Angeles-based Northrop Grumman and European Aeronautic Defence and Space Co., the maker of Airbus planes, surprised industry and elected officials. Air Force officials said the larger size of the Northrop-EADS aircraft helped tip the balance in its favor.
Chicago-based Boeing, which has been supplying refueling tankers to the Air Force for nearly 50 years and had been widely expected to hang onto that monopoly, could protest the decision, though the company said no decision has been made."
