It's been a while since chicagoans weren't dreading having to watch our beloved Bears get punished whenever they were scheduled for an appearance on Monday Night Football. This is the first one this year, (the second one will be on Dec. 11th against the Rams) and this year has so far been much better than most. In fact this is their best start since the year after they won the super bowl in '85.
I am not sure how these Monday Night games rate over on ESPN yeat as this is the maiden year, as compared to when they seemed to be more of a mainstream event while on ABC in previous years. But for true fans, the games are still popular, I know that I still watch them, and I will be watching tonight.
There are only two teams left that are undefeated, the Bears being one, Indianapolis Colts being the other, who did not play this weekend due to the bye week.
As I said last week, this is not a sports blog per say, but as a chicagoan and as long as the bears keep winning, I will be chronicling their progress or failure towards another hopeful super bowl appearance. I know it's way too early to make those predictions, but many who know sports here in this city have a special feeling about this particular team, having witnessed what occurred here with the '85 team and the many similarities, with the one glaring exception being the absence of a world class running back like sorely missed Super-Man & back Walter Payton. Other than that they stack up with the best thus far.
We are already seeing the comparisons from the pundits who usually beat the hell out of the teams here when they suck, but it's always fun in this city when the teams are unexpectedly great, as were the Sox last season.
When the following starts occurring, then it gets a little goofy for my tastes, but yet is fun, more fun than following a team that blows the big one, that much can be said.
Nothing will say success like 'Da Bears' | Chicago Tribune: "It's coming. You know it's coming. With each game the Bears win, the return of the immortal 'Da Bears' has to be just around the next bend.
More and more football fans are going to bring 'Da Bears' back to life as the team's popularity grows. You're going to hear it at the games, on TV, on your radio, on the street.
'Not so much yet,' said George Wendt, actor and authentic Superfan, when I asked if folks have been shouting it out to him in public. 'But if they keep on being undefeated, it's coming. You know it's coming.'
The TV debut of 'Da Bears' came in a Jan. 12, 1991 sketch on NBC's 'Saturday Night Live.'
Around a table at a restaurant (Mike Ditka's) sat four diehard—as in survivors of multiple heart attacks—Chicago football fans in matching Ditka mustaches and Bear-wear attire, eating ribs, guzzling beer and discussing the almighty powers and prowess of the greatest team and coach on Earth." read more
