I heard about this on the Laura Ingraham show and went to her website where I found this story posted below. I wish I were one of the folks out there that had the power to help "right this instant" in these kinds of cases but I don't, although hopefully with the help of Laura, her listeners and others theVFW will be able to recover quickly from their loss.
VFW Saddened By Loss: "GLASTONBURY -- Commander Frank Forrest rushed up the driveway, past the rubble of the Veterans of Foreign Wars building, with an ash-and-dust-covered photo album in his hands.
It was one of the few pieces of history to survive the fast-moving fire that consumed the building late Sunday. Coals from a cookout at the VFW over the weekend that were discarded near a pile of old lumber caused the fire, Deputy Fire Marshal Anthony Dignoti said. No injuries were reported.
Before tucking the album safely in the back seat of his car, Forrest expressed relief as he showed it to Gladys Niver, president of the auxiliary and a member of the VFW since it was formed by her then-husband 60 years ago.
'I wish I wasn't commander right now,' Forrest had said earlier Monday morning to Niver as they watched the demolition of the building that had housed the organization for more than 25 years.
'You had nothing to do with it,' Niver reassured him.
'It still hurts,' Forrest said.
The VFW leased the building from the town for $1 a year and did not have fire insurance, Forrest said. He said the organization could not afford a new structure and would likely use another town space for its meetings and programs." full story
