Proud Marine Survives Iraq, Dies Here Saving His Nephew

cbs2chicago.com - Former Marine's Body Found In Kankakee River: "CBS) WILMINGTON, Ill. The body of a former Marine was found in the Kankakee River Tuesday morning, about two miles upstream where he and two others who also died had jumped in to save a 4-year-old boy from drowning.

The body of former U.S. Marine Jafet Santoyo, was pulled out about 10:30 a.m. about a mile and a half upstream from the scene of the earlier incident, Wilmington Police Chief Wally Evans told CBS 2.

On Sunday, Jafet Santoyo's nephew, Brian Santoyo nearly drowned in the river, and Brian's mother, Delia Santoyo, 27, and a Good Samaritan, Alberto Medina, 28, both died trying to save him.

But authorities had been looking for Jafet Santoyo since Sunday, and he had been presumed dead.

Friends and family said they won’t rest until something is done about the dam that they believe took his life.

There are signs posted near the dam in English and Spanish that warn about the dangerous undertow, but Wilmington’s mayor wants to see even more done. He’s hoping the state will take over the dam and make it safer."
