Usually it's either the ACLU, the athiests or some other left wing organization and individual against anything that stands for or represents the God that they don't believe in..... unless it's a politician and it might help them to pretend they believe in him in order to aid their election bids that is. Then he or she becomes a great friend of the lord, Just ask Bill and Hillary.
But this time it's two different factions of residents and board members fighting amongst themselves as to who controls the property, money derived from the hawking of souvineers, and all the other activities related to supporting this mammoth neon cross located here in Illinois. Although no one is threatening to tear it down, they are tearing down what it stands for in a way.
The old saying "We have seen the enemy and he is us" comes to mind. But, what the last line of the story says, quoting an original member of the board of directors appropriately sums it all up:
"If Jesus were atop that cross, he'd look down and see the same thing he saw at Calvary: a bunch of people fightin', fussin', cheatin' and arguing over money and power," Vandergraph said. "It's just a terrible shame." --
